Past- When I was doing observation for my senior project in high school, I was in a classroom that helped children with learning disabilities. I observed a child who was in first grade who had a brain defect. There is a piece that connects the 2 hemispheres of your brain and this boy didn't have that. This defect effects the ability to remember some things. The woman I was with told me this beforehand, but if she didn't, I would have never known. This young boy got me to see how even with a birth defect, he was just like any other 6 year old. He did everything like a normal child except he had some trouble in reading. Also that anyone can be educated with a little help when they need it, that they don't have to struggle.
Present- In my first semester of college I had to do observation hours for a class and we were instructed to go to many different places. One of the places was a Headstart program. I had never heard of Headstart and didn't know what it was. I found out that it was a daycare program to help families that have low-income. The kids that are in the daycare probably didn't have much but they were happy to be in class. Sometimes because someone doesn't have a lot of money they leave their kids home. With this program the kids can still get an education that will help them for school. I just felt that it was a great idea so all kids are included in the learning process.
Future- When I think about my future and where I'll be, it's in a classroom. I just picture myself with my own classroom teaching second or third grade. But sometimes I picture myself owning my own bakery. It was something I wanted to do for a little while when deciding what I want to do for the rest of my life, but I kept coming back to teaching. When I think about it now, I know I won't own a bakery because my college education would have been a waste. But whenever I see a cookbook or a bakery I just wish that was me. I guess I will just have to see what the future has in store for me.
